When Hoping Hurts

Last Updated on Monday, 26 April 2010 03:49 Written by Marquese Martin-Hayes Friday, 23 April 2010 06:52

When hope comes up empty, how do you respond?
What do you do when, you’ve hoped for things and it just seems like it will not happen as you imagined?
What do you do when you’ve hoped for something and it simply IS NOT what you hoped?
Some tell us that we are to hold out and wait, particularly if its considered a good thing.

Let’s take a look at hope from a different angle and consider this from thought taken from the Tao Te Ching…..

What does it mean that hope is as hollow as fear? Hope and fear are both phantoms that arise from thinking of the self. When we don’t see the self as self, what do we have to fear?

If hope is as hollow as fear then why do we hope at all? Even the scriptures in the bible state “Hope deferred makes the heart sick!”
Who wants that?!

Hope and Fear are both forms of faith. You are going to believe in one or the other. When you believe, truly believe you align you actions with something you don’t have in hand. You may have the vision for it, but you don’t have it in hand. That requires an emotional and psychological attachment in order for it to be authentic. The good thing is that you can attach yourself to such a thing and create a reality. The bad is that you can also attach yourself to fear and live a life of perpetual disharmony with the universe. Hope and Fear both stem from your imagination. No wonder it hurts so bad when your hopes are not fulfilled.

So what do you do when that happens? How do you bounce back? In my experience, i have chosen to hope against hope on many occasions only to find out that cars can go through brick walls, but only at high speeds and at the complete destruction of the both the car (hopefully w/o passengers) and the structure. You see, it can be accomplished but by the time the car goes through the wall, neither the car or the wall are of any good use.  I have hit that wall many times.

Now that i am a little more thoughtful and focused. I realize that there was never anything wrong with hope ~ including hoping foolishly. On the other hand, counting the cost is just as important as hoping the hope. As I move forward in life, I will continue to hope. However, my hopes will not be solely based on a good feeling or a delightful thought. They will be supported by thoughtful research, introspection and counsel. Why? Because hitting the wall hurts.

When you hit the wall, what will you do? Go into depression? Give up? Walk away? Quit? Neither!  You see if you do any of those things then you decide to give in to fear. Fear is more dangerous than Hope that never arrives. At least if your heart is sick, it can be made whole again.  Fear captivates. Fear ceases expectation. Fear causes death ~ literally. Fear kills. Where do you think stress and anxiety come from?  FEAR. Fear is a powerful force that manipulates, steals and destroys everything in life and life itself.

So what do you do? You hope again! That’s it! Hope again!

You see, hope stirs life. It stirs creativity. It stimulates the heart. It creates vision. I don’t mean go back to being ignorant as i were and take the car through the wall anyway. No, on the contrary, chalk up the hope that didn’t come through as an experience and move forward. Will there be loss, absolutely. Hopefully (no pun intended), you did invest in what you hoped for, so there will be loss. However, it’s more important that you keep your vision and recreate. It’s more important that you reignite your passion. It’s more important that you LIVE! Fully Live! Life without hope is hell. Choose to hope again, even at the expense of picking your face up off of the floor from a devasting disappointment!

Hoping again, will give you a face lift!
That’s the Proper Perspective!
